Diabetic foot ulcers develop due to neuropathy, poor circulation, and impaired immune response making them among the most complex wounds to heal.

What Is It?

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are open sores or wounds that occur in approximately 15% of patients with diabetes, most commonly on the bottom of the foot. Peripheral neuropathy causes patients to lose protective sensation, meaning injuries go unnoticed and untreated. Poor blood flow further impairs the body's ability to heal.

Signs & Symptoms to Look For

  • Open wound on the sole, toe, or heel

  • Minimal or absent pain due to neuropathy

  • Wound edges may be callused or hyperkeratotic

  • Surrounding tissue may appear pale, cool, or cyanotic

  • Possible drainage, odor, or signs of infection
